How to Set Up myGovID and RAM: A Step-by-Step Guide

The way you access government online services has changed. After March 27, 2020, AUSkey and Manage ABN connections were replaced by myGovID and Relationship Authorisation Manager (RAM). Here’s how you can set them up for your business.

What are myGovID and RAM?

  • myGovID: An authentication app that allows you to prove your identity online. It’s different from your myGov account and is used on your smart device.

  • RAM (Relationship Authorisation Manager): An authorisation service that lets you act on behalf of a business online when linked with your myGovID.

Getting Started

Ensure your business details are correct on the Australian Business Register (ABR). Then, follow these steps:

Step 1: Update Your Details on the ABR

It's crucial to verify and update your business details on the ABR. Incorrect details will prevent you from successfully linking your ABN to your myGovID in RAM.

For instructions on managing and updating your details on ABR, refer to the ABR website.

Step 2: Set Up Your myGovID App

  1. Download the App: The myGovID app is available on the Apple Store or Google Play. It’s compatible with most smart devices but not with desktops or laptops.

  2. Enter Your Details: Provide your full name, date of birth, and an email address that is exclusively yours. Use the email associated with your existing myGov account.

  3. Add Identity Documents: Verify your identity with two of the following documents:

    • Australian driver’s licence

    • Australian birth certificate

    • Medicare card

    • Australian passport

If you encounter difficulties, visit the myGovID website or call the myGovID support line at 1300 287 539 (option 2), available from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm (AEST), Monday to Friday.

Step 3: Link Your ABN to Your myGovID in RAM

The principal authority of the business (e.g., sole trader, trustee, director) must link the ABN to their myGovID in RAM. Follow these steps:

  1. Log into RAM: Use your myGovID to log in at authorisationmanager.gov.au.

  2. Link Your Business:

    • Select “Link my business” and follow the prompts to the ATO.

    • Enter your address as held by the ATO and select your business from the list.

    • Enter an email address to receive an authorisation code, which can be different from the email used for myGovID. Verify and continue.

  3. Confirm: A confirmation message will display once your business is successfully linked.

If your business's only listed associate is another entity, you must manually link it by calling the ATO at 1300 287 539 (option 3).

For further assistance, visit the RAM website or call the RAM support line at 1300 287 539 (option 3), available from 8.00 am to 6.00 pm, Monday to Friday.

Step 4: Set Up Authorisations

You can now appoint a business representative as either an Authorisation Administrator or Authorised User.

Creating a New Authorisation:

  1. Select Manage Authorisations: Choose the business you want to add an authorisation to.

  2. Add New User: Enter the representative's details, including their name and email address.

  3. Set Authorisation Details:

    • Determine if the user will be an authorisation administrator or machine credential administrator.

    • Set a start and end date for the authorisation (required for Basic users).

  4. Set Agency Access: Select the level of access (Full, Custom, or None).

  5. Review and Accept: Review the details and accept the declaration.

An authorisation request and code will be emailed to the user. They must accept or decline within seven days, or a new request will need to be sent.

Special Considerations

  • Tax Accounting Advice: You don’t need to authorise tax agents through RAM. They will notify the ATO on your behalf.

  • Employees Without Full Australian ID: Employees needing a Basic myGovID should have at least one Australian ID document and call the ATO for verification.

For more detailed instructions and support, visit the RAM website or contact the support line at 1300 287 539 (option 3).
